As the latest in a series of thoughtful projects exploring the nature of inspiration and creativity, experience design firm HUSH launches HUSH+1, a podcast “for makers, by makers.” The podcast is an insider’s look, delivering open and honest dialogue between creatives across a variety of industries.
Born out of HUSH’s weekly, internal speaker series, Creative Jam, the HUSH+1 podcast is a biweekly platform for creativity, both in and outside of the design industry. The episodes host leaders from all creative walks of life — design, art, technology, architecture, fashion, engineering, fabrication, psychology, music, urban planning, and more — to discuss what they do, why they do it, and what motivates them.
HUSH’s work has always focused on inspiring reflection and creating a compelling participatory experience, and HUSH+1 is no different. “Design is by nature, a process of shaping some outside force, curating information, and giving form to something extrinsic,” explains HUSH Founding Partner David Schwarz. “So, HUSH+1 guests are intentionally from outside of our exact world – they are tangential forces, thinking about similar subject matter, but through a different lens. They are the +1.”
It is launching with guests such as scientific research-based artist Ani Liu, artist and technologist Amelia Winger-Bearskin, Mark Kleback of Brooklyn’s indie game arcade Wonderville, and light sculptor Jason Krugman. Each conversation is a refreshing, maker-focused talk that doesn’t eschew the technical and creative details, but rather focuses on the individual’s steps along their creative path.
“The nature of the guests is quite broad,” continues Schwarz. “While the guests we interview would certainly be interesting for nearly anyone, we engage in the conversation with the knowledge that we’re insiders talking to other insiders.”
HUSH+1 is hosted by HUSH Systems Designer Adam Kruckenberg, a maker with a love for technology, music, sound design, and audio production. His passion for engaging other like-minded people, along with his technical expertise, were crucial in catapulting the project from idea to reality.
“I have a deep and nerdy curiosity about artistic pursuits,” Kruckenberg explains, “and the more involved and complex, the better. I want to provide a space for a wide range of artists and creators to talk about their work, and the thoughts and intention behind it. I want to hear how they got to where they are, and to understand the technical aspects of process and development of ideas. Hopefully, we get to see the things that have captured our guests’ imaginations and understand their desire to make what they make.”
HUSH+1’s goal is simple: to share a maker’s internal dialogue with the world, giving her audience the feeling of eavesdropping on a particularly insightful conversation. Even those who don’t practice within the worlds of art, architecture, or technology can be titillated by the subject matter, constantly being exposed to new people who are making and exploring their craft.
The podcast celebrates these connections and looks to inspire an audience that seeks only to learn the many different ways that it means to be creative.
HUSH+1 is available on Spotify, Apple, Google, Stitcher, and Pocket Casts.
