On the heels of its premiere at SXSW and iTunes, creative content agency Conscious Minds (CM) and Gravitas Ventures, a Red Arrow Studios company, haves reached a distribution deal with Netflix for the documentary feature Social Animals, produced under CM’s Subconscious Films banner.
Helmed by CM Director/Partner Jonathan Ignatius Green, Social Animals follows the lives and Instagram accounts of three teenagers – a thrill-seeking photographer turned influencer, an aspiring swimsuit model with about to hit a half million followers, and a Midwest girl next door – each seeking validation and social success through followers, likes, and comments.
The documentary stirs the ongoing conversation about the role and influence of social media on culture and, more importantly, individuals. While the narrative primarily focuses on the impact on teenagers, the themes and behaviors captured onscreen apply to those of all ages for whom social media is a daily part of their lives.
For CM Founder/Executive Producer Blake Heal joining Netflix’s expansive library is a great opportunity to share this relevant story to digital audiences. “Netflix has become the premium home for documentary features and series, and we’re thrilled that Social Animals will be available on a platform where audiences expect the best non-fiction content,” explains Heal. “It’s also the perfect way to introduce the Subconscious Films brand.”
Conscious Minds has created an innovative documentary in Social Animals and Gravitas is excited to showcase the film on Netflix beginning March 18th , said Michael Murphy, President at Gravitas Ventures.
Social Animals joins Netflix after its successful December 2018 iTunes debut. To celebrate that milestone, CM partnered with e-commerce startup GIST to develop “As Seen On IG” (ASOIG) vending machines, which sold satirical items such as “Sliding into DMs Packages”, “Thumb Spas”, and plastic “Hashtag 8-Balls.” The insta-worthy locations were stationed throughout Los Angeles and San Francisco. All proceeds from the ASOIG campaign went to Reboot & Recover, a non-profit organization dedicated to building awareness and treatments for digital addictions.
Social Animals is available for streaming on Netflix beginning March 19th.
