Whitehouse Post Editor Sam Puglise-Kipley Cuts Endearing Tale of Unrequited Love Underground for Avalanches’ ‘Because I’m Me’
Whitehouse Post editor Sam Puglise-Kipley has re-teamed with director Greg Brunkalla to herald the return of beloved Aussie sampling-rock maestros The Avalanches with the band’s charming new music video, “Because I’m Me,” which was produced by StinkFilm and Walter Pictures.
Collaborating in brisk fashion over the course of several days post-shoot, Puglise-Kipley and Brunkalla provide a stylish, retro-framed portrait of New York City’s subway underground in a film about unrequited love that’s complete with a marching band and an endearing, enamored young lad with irrepressible charm and moves.
According to Puglise-Kipley, the “Because I’m Me” shoot offered the chance to not only partner once again with Brunkalla following their previous music video projects including Danny Brown’s “Grown Up,” but help craft a cool, captivating promo for one of his favorite bands. “I am a big fan of the Avalanches so I was excited when I first heard it was for them,” he recalls. “Also, the treatment called for a cinematic prelude, which I really liked as it added an extra layer to the story and the video and really brought to life the love relationship that was in the song.”
The close working relationship allowed for Puglise-Kipley and Brunkalla to bounce ideas directly off each other during the post process. According to Sam, this type of hands-on collaboration is what distinguishes cutting music videos from commercials. “I love collaborating with directors and with music videos, it’s usually just you and the director together,” Puglise-Kipley explains. “Music videos give me the advantage of experimenting a bit more. They are purely entertainment, and that makes them a lot of fun to cut.”
