Carbon VFX Takes Over the Crossroads of the World for Intel

To celebrate the launch of Intel’s latest mobile app “Pocket Avatars,” Carbon VFX brought several of the app’s adorable creatures to life right in the heart of New York’s Times Square. The app provides animated alternatives to standard text messaging and utilizes the camera on mobile devices to create and send unique animal messages. During lunchtime on Thursday, June 19th, the avatars took over nine billboards, each at a distinct corner of Times Square.

In the impressive display, made possible by the talented artists at Carbon VFX, the characters playfully skipped and bounced across the enormous HD screens. Lead by creative director and flame artist, Kieran Walsh, Carbon teams in Los Angeles and New York handled all aspects of production with post-production elements from After Effects, CG, and Flame. The LA team created the Giraffe and Lion avatars in CG and New York tackled the final compositing.

“It was truly a coordinated team effort on all fronts to get all the animations designed, composited and delivered for nine uniquely formatted screens in less than one week.” stated Walsh. “The schedule proved to be the most challenging aspect of the project, so it was a true testament to the determination of the artists, agency and clients alike in seeing it realized on the big screens in Time Square today.”
