Rock Fight’s Joe Cole Creates Green How-To Project
for Live Earth The Brief: Rock Fight’s Joe Cole’s recent 2:30 short, “Light Bulb,” for Live Earth delivers green-friendly action-steps by showcasing the plight of a hapless couple as they struggle through a trip to the hardware store to purchase and then screw in energy efficient bulbs in their home. A part of the recent Live Earth event, Joe Cole’s “Light Bulb” executive produced by Rock Fight is a green-friendly comedic long form guide to using energy-efficient bulbs. The film was part of a series of ten shorts for the Live Earth (www.liveearth.org) event that was broadcasted on television, online, and across installations and festivals around the globe. Attracted to the cause and the complete creative freedom, Cole developed the concept, wrote, and directed this client-direct initiative. Never afraid to take a comedic poke at something to make a point and tell a story, Joe created a parody of an educational film, walking viewers through a literal step-by-step instructional how to guide covering the purchase and home installation of energy-efficient light bulbs. Commenting on the creative process, Cole notes, “Because energy-efficient bulbs have been around for such a long time but are so underutilized, we thought that taking a comedic instructional approach to such a simple concept could really be successful. As a whole, the experience was truly amazing—so many people were willing to donate their time, energy, and talent to such a great cause.” Each of the short films in the series discusses an issue of global climate change and what can be done to make a difference. Ned Brown, Rock Fight’s Partner/EP comments, “This was a great project for Joe—he is really environmentally passionate and was able to use his youthful exuberance and creativity to deliver a beautiful and effective piece with limited funding. The entire event got tremendous exposure around the world and we were thrilled to be a part of it.” About Joe Cole: Joe Cole started his career in on air promos at Comedy Central before moving onto become a producer at McCann-Erickson New York. While at McCann, Cole worked on prestigious campaigns for clients such as Mastercard, Coca-Cola, and Motorola. During this time, he and his wife also founded fashion label Kristen Lee, which designs high fashion women's accessories sold worldwide; they later added a men's line called The Reform Party. Following a life-long dream to work behind the camera, Joe left the agency world and immediately transitioned into a successful directorial career. Shooting spots for clients like Oribit, Rolling Rock, Certs, IFC, and Time Warner, he was able to hone his craft and develop a powerful reputation as a performance-driven narrative director with a quirky and dry comedic edge. Joe also shot a series of short films for his fashion labels that showcase his deep understanding of dramatic emotion. Recently, he was also asked to take the position of resident editor for the witty and stylish Luxe City Guides.
