Top jumP Project Resurrected For Another Run
Two years after its award-winning theater debut, Director Steven Sebring's Patti Smith: Dream of Life recently aired on PBS and a related art exhibition, "Objects of Life" opened at the Robert Miller Gallery in New York. The film, edited in part by jumP's Lin Polito and finished by Angelo Carrao ACE, captures the vision and spirit of poet, painter, musician, and punk rock icon Patti Smith in the most humble and pure state. Polito helped skillfully thread ten years of footage together to define an intimate portrait featuring the artist's breathtaking performances on tour, unrestricting love for her children, devotion to late husband Fred "Sonic" Smith, and overwhelmingly hypnotic narrative poetry.
The re-release of the film serves as validation of a long-running relationship between Polito and Sebring, which began with a short film many years ago. Using footage dating to Smith's 1996 London tour stop, Polito collaborated closely on the project with Sebring for five years, even while continually working on commercials. She continually revisited the film as Sebring added new footage, working 10 to 12 hours nearly every day out of the director's loft apartment.
"I'm really happy to see this film go another round," noted Polito. "The editing process was really incredible. In the beginning, it was like throwing things against the wall and seeing what stuck, but Steven had a unique vision and aesthetic of what he wanted to do, and my job was to support that. The subject matter really inspired me. I've always thought Patti was very cool, and the footage of her at home, when she exposed herself in a totally natural way, was a real triumph of Sebring's skill. I was happy to see that even though my input on the project was in the beginning of the venture, what I did was intact in the final cut that's getting another release."
Among many other accolades, the film earned the Winner of Excellence in Cinematography Award at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.
