New Documentary by DNA Director Nigel Dick Makes its Premiere at WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival

One of the star directors at live-action production company DNA, Nigel Dick, is hitting the festival scene this week with his latest independent documentary, “Berlin Calling.” The film is an emotionally-riveting story of Kastle Waserman, a second-generation Holocaust survivor, as she pulls back the suburban veil to uncover the chilling secrets of her father’s life as a Jewish man in WWII Germany.

Serving as the film’s world premiere, “Berlin Calling” will screen at 7:00 PM on April 10th at the 47th Annual WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival. Houston is coincidentally the home of the film’s subject, Ben Waserman, and where his daughter was raised.

“This week’s premiere represents an exciting finale for a film shot over a period of seven years and in four countries,” notes Dick. “Kastle and I took on this project entirely on our own without any exterior funding or assistance. It’s a small film that takes on a huge subject, and we’re immensely proud of it.”

Growing up in suburban Texas, Kastle rarely heard of her father’s past. It wasn’t until she entered her teens and developed an interest for a punk rock lifestyle that something triggered in her father, bringing forth his deepest fears of persecution and the consequences of being marked as “different.”

As an adult, Kastle began to unearth the story behind these fears. Interspersed with her father’s detailed descriptions of his time in a concentration camp and historical context of the dawn of WWII, the film travels alongside our main character as her research takes her across the globe from Houston and Los Angeles to Berlin, Prague and Paris. Along the way, she opens the very file that the Nazis kept on her family and she has a surprising revelation: the fate of a family member who disappeared in the early days of persecution.

Born in England and based in Los Angeles, Nigel Dick is a highly-regarded film director, musician and writer who has directed more than 340 music videos and 17 documentaries and feature film projects, many of which were in collaboration with DNA. His work includes videos for artists like Guns n’ Roses, Oasis and Britney Spears, and for brands like Bud Light, Sierra Mist and Target.

“Berlin Calling” is also nominated to receive the prestigious REMI award. Winners will be announced at the festival during an awards gala on April 12th.
